# AGSS receiving system

In HTM 02-01 (2026), the NHS England guidance, the AGSS receiving system is the part of an anaesthetic gas scavenging system between the transfer hose from the patient's exhalation valve and the disposal hose to the AGSS terminal unit; HTM says it forms part of the anaesthetic equipment.

The transfer hose connects the receiving system to the exhalation valve, which collects waste gases from the patient or the ventilator, and the disposal hose connects it to the fully adjustable, gas-specific AGSS terminal unit to BS EN ISO 9170-2. HTM 02-01 notes that considerable dilution occurs within the receiving system, and that AGSS flow rates directly affect the induced flow on the patient breathing system.

ISO 7396-2:2007, still current, applies only to [AGSS disposal systems](https://library.ultracontrolo.com/glossary/agss-disposal-system/) intended to be connected through AGSS terminal units to ISO 9170-2 to receiving systems to ISO 8835-3. ISO 8835-3:2007, which covered transfer and receiving systems of active AGSS to reduce staff exposure while protecting the patient, for example against excessive flow and pressure, is withdrawn; its revision is ISO 80601-2-13, now the 2022 edition with Amendment 1:2026.

In HTM 02-01 testing, the AGSS tests are designed to ensure that the safety provisions of receiving systems will be met, and the test device replicates either type of receiving system for which the disposal system was designed.
