# Preventive maintenance

Preventive maintenance is scheduled maintenance, which PATH and CHAI (2021) distinguish from corrective maintenance after a failure; under HTM 02-01 Part B (2026), the NHS England guidance, every medical gas pipeline system should be subject to a planned preventive maintenance (PPM) schedule under the Authorised Person (MGPS).

HTM 02-01 states that medical gas maintenance is undertaken to minimise the risks of unplanned interruptions, that all work should follow the HTM and manufacturers' recommendations, and that schedules and frequencies should be adapted where risks have been identified. For PSA plants, PATH and CHAI (2021) list cleaning or replacing filters, draining water or oil traps, replacing lubricants and calibrating pressure and oxygen sensors, and note that corrective maintenance may require rebuilding a valve assembly or compressor after a failure. UNDP's requirements for oxygen plants (effective 1 January 2025) say the end user, with the supplier, should implement a preventive maintenance schedule according to the manufacturer's recommendations, and the Global Fund commissioning guideline (28 August 2024) includes a detailed schedule, with service intervals and parts or kits for each piece of equipment, in the handover documents.
