Vacuum and AGSS
Why does medical vacuum need bacterial filters?
Why are bacterial filters fitted to medical vacuum plants, and where?
Short answer
Under the NHS England guidance HTM 02-01 and Portugal's ACSS ET 03/2006, bacterial filters sit on the pipeline side of a medical vacuum plant, ahead of the vessels and pumps, so that the exhaust is free of bacteria and liquid; a duplex set lets one filter be serviced while the other carries the full flow.
Protection works in two stages. At the bedside, HTM 02-01 (2026) asks for suction to be applied through a suction control device, with the fluid collected in suction jars; the control device should include a slam-shut mechanism and a hydrophobic filter to minimise carry-over into the pipeline. At the plant, bacterial filters treat the air before it reaches the vessels, the pumps and the exhaust.
Where the filters go
- HTM 02-01 (England): duplex subassemblies, each with at least one bacteria filter and a drainage trap with a clear collection flask. Manual isolating valves let either subassembly work alone, and each is rated for the full plant capacity (paragraphs 10.9 and 10.23).
- ACSS ET 03/2006 (Portugal): a dual treatment system upstream of the vacuum vessels, each set meeting the nominal flow, so that the exhaust is free of bacteria and liquids (section 4.8).
- The plant vacuum indicator reads the pipeline vacuum on the pipeline side of the bacteria filter (HTM 02-01, 10.45).
What the filters change in the plant (HTM 02-01, England)
- The pumps should be able to produce a higher vacuum than the pipeline needs, so that the filter resistance and the exhaust back pressure are overcome (10.26).
- Each filter should be marked “biohazard”, with a safe procedure for changing and disposing of the filters and emptying the drainage trap (10.24).
- Bacteria filters should comply with BS 3928 (10.25).
Dental vacuum is different
In dry dental vacuum systems a bacteria filter between the separator and the pump inlets is desirable. In wet systems it is not practicable, so where upstream filtration is not possible the filter goes in the pump exhaust line (HTM 02-01, 11.21).
ULTRAVAC
The basic ULTRAVAC configuration includes 2 bacterial filters with liquid separator, according to the ULTRAVAC datasheet.
More questions
Why are there two filter sets?
So that one can be isolated for a filter change while the other, rated for the full plant capacity, keeps the vacuum supply running (HTM 02-01, 10.23).
Do bedside jars replace the plant filters?
No. The jar and the regulator's hydrophobic filter limit carry-over at the bedside; the plant filters still treat the air before the pumps and the exhaust.
