Area alarm
An area alarm is a medical gas alarm panel in a ward or department that monitors pipeline pressure and vacuum in the zone served by an area valve service unit (AVSU), so staff see at once when that zone goes out of range.
HTM 02-01 (2026), the NHS England guidance for medical gas pipeline systems, names three types of medical gas alarm: area alarms, plant alarms and pressure-reducing station (PRS) alarms. An area alarm watches the pipeline between the AVSU and the terminal units that connect to the patient, so no other isolation valve may sit between them, apart from valves in medical supply units. The panel shows high and low pressure for each pressurised gas, with a digital pressure reading, and a vacuum fault.
The panel goes at the main location of the ward or department: the nurse station of a ward, the control room of an imaging suite, or inside the operating theatre, separate from the surgeon's panel. Every area alarm should be able to report to the building management system, for outward reporting only. In the US, the NFPA 99 text reproduced in a 2021 NFPA committee report also groups medical gas alarms into master, area and local alarms.
Ultra Controlo supplies alarm relay panels for zones, valves and second-stage units, as well as master alarm panels, for medical gas pipelines.
