CGA 540 cylinder valve connection

CGA 540 is a Compressed Gas Association (CGA) cylinder valve connection that WHO's technical specifications for medical oxygen cylinders (December 2024) list among the bull-nose connection types, with the 5/8 inch BSP (F)/BS 341 No. 3, DIN 9, NF 'F', NEN Ri2 and JIS B 8246 connections.

WHO asks buyers to ensure that the valve connection type is compatible with the manifold and regulation assemblies used. WHO lists the same CGA 540 option for the filling manifold of a cylinder filling station fed by an on-site oxygen generator plant and for distribution manifold adaptors serving high-pressure gas cylinders, while liquid oxygen cylinders use CGA-440 or 3/8 inch NPT connections.

The earlier WHO-UNICEF specifications for oxygen therapy devices (2019) list the CGA 540 valve among standard valves compliant with ISO and US standards, chosen also according to the size and pressure of the cylinder and any applicable regulation, and give integral valves a refill valve compliant with ISO 5145/CGA 540. WHO's Foundations of medical oxygen systems (17 February 2023) notes that cylinder valve models change with the national standard applied and with the use, industrial or medicinal.

CGA's standard for these connections is CGA V-1, Standard for Compressed Gas Cylinder Valve Outlet and Inlet Connections (16th edition, July 2023). CGA states that it sets detailed dimensions for cylinder valve outlet and inlet connections, with standard outlet connections for respective gases designed to minimize the possibility of hazardous misconnections.
