Line isolation valve
Under HTM 02-01 (2026), the NHS England guidance, line isolation valves are specified as line valves (LVs) and line valve assemblies (LVAs): lockable lever-ball valves used for isolations on a medical gas pipeline, with LVAs at points such as supply connections, branches and risers.
HTM 02-01 (2026) Part A says all such valves should be of the lever-ball type with flanged O-ring seal connections that open and close with a 90-degree rotation, the handle in line with the pipe when open, and should be lockable, with independent keys kept in the medical gas key safe. An LVA should be lockable open or closed, with a spade for physical isolation, white for "through" and red for "blanking", and NIST connector bodies with self-sealing check valves upstream and downstream of the flanges. LVs should meet the LVA requirements excluding the NIST components and are used for isolations where NISTs are not required.
LVAs should be provided at points that include the connection to any source of supply, at the emergency inlet port, at building entries and exits, at branches from the main run and at risers, and should not be installed on the patient side of the area valve service unit. Closing an isolating valve that restricts the supply falls under the permit to work system (Part B). Ultra Controlo supplies a shut-off line isolation valve used in main risers, plant rooms and distribution networks for oxygen, compressed air and vacuum circuits.
