MTBF (mean time between failures)
MTBF (mean time between failures) is the average time elapsed between failures of a piece of equipment; WHO's Medical equipment maintenance programme overview (2011) lists it among the measures recorded to monitor corrective maintenance performance.
WHO lists MTBF with repeated failures (the number of failures within a specified period of time), response time (from a request for service to the start of repair), repair time (from the start to the finish of repair) and downtime (the percentage of time that a device is out of service). WHO's guide on computerized maintenance management systems (2011) says such a system can monitor equipment performance indicators such as mean time between failures, downtime and maintenance costs, for individual items or for groups of equipment of the same model, type or manufacturer, and that dashboard reports might present mean time between failures, downtime and response time as key performance indicators.
For oxygen plants, WHO's technical specifications for oxygen generator plants (December 2024) list remote monitoring as an option, with any need for integration into a computerized maintenance management system to be specified, and ask the control panel to display cumulative hours of operation. See corrective maintenance and which KPIs a hospital should track for its oxygen plant.
