Cleaned for oxygen service
Under HTM 02-01 (2026), the NHS England guidance, pipes cleaned for oxygen service are cleaned and degreased and free of particulate matter and toxic residues in accordance with BS EN 13348, and HTM 02-01 asks for this on all medical gas pipes.
HTM 02-01 (2026) Part B notes that oxygen strongly supports combustion and is highly dangerous in contact with oils, greases, tar-like substances and many plastics, that oil and grease with high-pressure oxygen and nitrous oxide are liable to combustion, and that rapid pressurisation can cause ignition by adiabatic compression, particularly with oil, grease or hand-cream residues. Part A asks for pipes capped at both ends and fittings sealed individually in plastic bags, only oil-free and grease-free tools and dies, no PTFE tape on oxygen systems or supply plants, and liquid or gel sealing media only if proven safe in the tests of BS EN ISO 15001.
EN 13348:2016 is the European standard for seamless copper tubes from 6 to 219 mm outside diameter for medical gas or vacuum pipelines at operating pressures up to 2 000 kPa. ISO 15001:2010 sets oxygen compatibility requirements for materials, components and devices in anaesthetic and respiratory equipment exposed to oxygen above 50 kPa, and the 2020 WHO interim specification for PSA oxygen plants (superseded by WHO's technical specifications of 31 December 2024) asked for pressurised vessels cleaned to ISO 15001, ASTM G93 or equivalent. Ultra Controlo describes its medical copper pipe as manufactured to EN 13348 with internal cleanliness verification.
