Standards

ISO 5359:2014 Low-pressure hose assemblies for medical gases

ISO 5359:2014 is the ISO standard for low-pressure hose assemblies used with medical gases and vacuum, at pressures up to 1 400 kPa and vacuum not greater than 60 kPa absolute; it is in force with Amendment 1:2017, and its fifth edition, ISO/DIS 5359, has been at DIS ballot since 25 September 2026.

What the standard covers

ISO 5359 specifies requirements for low-pressure hose assemblies for oxygen, nitrous oxide, medical air, helium, carbon dioxide, xenon, specified mixtures of these gases, oxygen-enriched air, air and nitrogen for driving surgical tools, and vacuum. It applies to hose assemblies operating at pressures up to 1 400 kPa and to vacuum systems at pressures not greater than 60 kPa absolute.

What it does not cover

  • The dimensions and allocation of the gas-specific inlet and outlet connectors of the hose assemblies.
  • Coaxial hoses used for the supply and removal of air for driving surgical tools.
  • The intended uses of hose assemblies.

Edition in force and status

  • ISO 5359:2014 is the fourth edition, published in October 2014 (22 pages, ISO/TC 121/SC 1), with Amendment 1:2017. It replaced ISO 5359:2008 and its 2011 amendment, both withdrawn.
  • ISO states that the standard was last reviewed and confirmed in 2020; it is now at stage 90.92 (to be revised), and ISO expects it to be replaced by ISO/DIS 5359 within the coming months.
  • ISO/DIS 5359, the fifth edition, was approved as a project on 6 October 2025 and has been at DIS ballot since 25 September 2026.

Where it is cited

  • Under HTM 02-01 (2026), the NHS England guidance, hose specifications should be determined at the design stage and before installation (see BS EN ISO 5359), in movable systems where flexible hoses connect the terminal units to the NISTs, all hoses should be BS EN ISO 5359 compliant, and flexible connecting assemblies used within the fitting of a medical supply unit should comply with BS EN ISO 5359.
  • Portugal's ACSS ET 03/2006 (V.2024) lists EN ISO 5359:2014 among the standards to be taken into account.

Related standards

  • ISO 18082: dimensions, allocation and marking of NIST low-pressure connectors, for operating pressures up to 1 400 kPa.
  • ISO 11197: medical supply units.

More questions

Does ISO 5359 define the connectors on medical gas hoses?

No. It does not specify the dimensions and allocation of the gas-specific inlet and outlet connectors; the dimensions of NIST connectors are specified in ISO 18082.

Is ISO 5359 being revised?

Yes. ISO/DIS 5359, the fifth edition, has been at DIS ballot since 25 September 2026, and ISO expects it to replace the 2014 edition within the coming months.
