Vacuum and AGSS
WAGD (waste anesthetic gas disposal)
WAGD (waste anesthetic gas disposal) is the term NFPA 99, the US Health Care Facilities Code, used in its 2012 edition for systems that dispose of waste anaesthetic gases; the US CMS fire safety rule of 4 May 2016 lists WAGD systems, with medical gas and vacuum systems, in the scope of its Chapter 5.
The rule, published in the Federal Register, describes the 2012 edition of NFPA 99: Chapter 5 covers the performance, maintenance, installation and testing of nonflammable medical gas systems below a gauge pressure of 300 psi, vacuum systems, WAGD systems and manufactured assemblies intended for connection to them, and it does not mandate the installation of any system. NFPA 99 is now in its 2027 edition. OSHA's guidelines on anesthetic gases (1999, revised 18 May 2000), which are advisory rather than a standard, describe the gas disposal assembly of a scavenging system as conveying excess gases to a point where they can be discharged safely, by methods that include ventilation systems, a central vacuum system, a dedicated waste gas exhaust system, a passive duct system and an adsorber.
ISO 7396-2 and NHS England's HTM 02-01 (2026) use the term anaesthetic gas scavenging system (AGSS). HTM 02-01 covers only fully active systems, used to remove waste anaesthetic gases from the patient's breathing circuit through fixed pipework, and notes that AGSS should not be incorporated into vacuum systems. The Ultra Controlo ULTRASEG is an active AGSS that complies with EN ISO 7396-2. See AGSS disposal system.
