FD S90-155: French guidance for medical gas networks

FD S90-155 is an AFNOR fascicule de documentation that adds elements for the design and acceptance of medical gas and vacuum pipeline systems built to NF EN ISO 7396-1; it is informative rather than a mandatory standard, and the November 2024 edition is current.

Scope

FD S90-155 complements NF EN ISO 7396-1, the French adoption of the international pipeline standard ISO 7396-1, with elements for the design and the acceptance (réception) of medical gas and vacuum distribution systems. As a fascicule de documentation (FD), it is informative: AFNOR's summary of the earlier May 2016 edition describes its content as given for information. It guides design and acceptance; the requirements remain those of NF EN ISO 7396-1.

Edition and status

  • AFNOR lists the November 2024 edition (35 pages) as a published, current document.
  • The June 2023 edition is cancelled and replaced by the November 2024 edition.

What it means for hospitals and designers

  • Use it alongside NF EN ISO 7396-1, not instead of it.
  • Quote the edition date, November 2024, in specifications, because the earlier edition is cancelled.
  • It is used beyond France: general note II in the annex of the Portuguese ACSS ET 03/2006 (v.2024) asks for one of FD S 90-155, HTM 2022, AS 2896-1998 or SIS HB 370 to be applied when sizing medical gas distribution networks; HTM 2022 has since been superseded by HTM 02-01 (2026), and section 16 of the same specification lists AS 2896-2011 and the 2016 and 2023 editions of FD S 90-155, while the edition AFNOR lists as current is that of November 2024.
  • At the outlets, French sockets and probes follow NF S90-116, which requires the socket to meet NF EN ISO 9170-1.

More questions

Is FD S90-155 mandatory?

No. It is a fascicule de documentation, an informative document; AFNOR's summary of the May 2016 edition describes its design and acceptance elements as given for information, complementary to NF EN ISO 7396-1.
