NF S90-116: French medical gas sockets and probes

NF S90-116 is the French standard, published by AFNOR, that describes the gas-specific quick-connect system between a medical gas socket and the probe of a medical device; the edition in force is the October 2020 edition, which replaced the June 1988 edition, now cancelled.

Scope

NF S90-116 describes, for each medical gas, the connection between the socket head and the end fitting of the medical device: a notched quick-connect system. It requires the socket to meet NF EN ISO 9170-1, sets the maximum permissible leakage of the connection and the strength of the mounting, and specifies the marking for each gas. AFNOR lists it in English as covering sockets and related probes for medical fluids in medical gas pipeline distribution systems, for design and installation.

Edition and status

AFNOR lists NF S90-116 of October 2020 (18 pages) as current. The June 1988 edition, which covered terminal units and related probes for medical fluids, is cancelled. Status checked on the AFNOR store on 22 October 2026; the full text is sold by AFNOR and was not reproduced here.

What it means for hospitals and designers

  • Two layers apply to a French outlet: ISO 9170-1, adopted as NF EN ISO 9170-1, for the terminal unit's performance and non-interchangeability, and NF S90-116 for the gas-specific socket and probe system, whose dimensions ISO 9170-1 does not fix.
  • Because the standard covers both the socket and the related probe, the outlets and the probes on hoses and medical devices should be specified to the same system.
  • The pipeline behind the outlets follows NF EN ISO 7396-1, with the informative FD S90-155 adding design and acceptance elements.

More questions

Does NF S90-116 replace ISO 9170-1 in France?

No. NF S90-116 requires the socket to meet NF EN ISO 9170-1 and adds the gas-specific connection between socket and probe.

Is the 1988 edition of NF S90-116 still valid?

No. AFNOR lists the June 1988 edition as cancelled and the October 2020 edition as current.
