Oxygen and PSA
How often does PSA zeolite need replacing?
How long does the zeolite in a PSA oxygen generator last before it needs replacing?
Short answer
PSA zeolite is replaced on the supplier's schedule or when it stops performing: NHS England's HTM 02-01 (2026) asks for molecular-sieve charges to be replaced at the intervals the supplier recommends or if proven ineffective, and the ULTRAOX 2022 datasheet states that in good conditions its zeolite can last up to 10 years or more.
What the guidance says
HTM 02-01 Part B, the NHS England operational guidance (2026), asks for PSA-column molecular-sieve charges to be replaced with the appropriate material at intervals recommended by the supplier, or if the material has been proven ineffective, and for a record of the type, batch number and date of change. PATH and CHAI (2021), under corrective maintenance, say that sieve beds must be recharged periodically if the plant's oxygen generating capacity or purity falls. The 2020 WHO interim specification for PSA plants (superseded by WHO's technical specifications of 31 December 2024) included sieve beds among the brand-specific items in the 3-year spare parts list it asked manufacturers to define.
WHO's Foundations of medical oxygen systems (2023) adds that VSA sieve beds have a longer projected lifespan and require less maintenance than PSA sieve beds.
What the sources link to sieve damage
- Moisture: AIGA 113/20, adopted from EIGA Doc 195, notes that an increase in moisture content would lead to accelerated damage of the oxygen 93 adsorbers, and lists moisture among the parameters monitored continuously. The USAID RISE operating procedure, written for hospitals in India, says that dried air eliminates operational issues in the molecular sieves.
- Contaminated intake air: WHO (2023) asks for the distances endorsed by the manufacturer from sources of contaminated air, such as diesel generator exhaust or waste incinerators, to be followed to reduce degradation of parts such as filters and sieve beds. In Portugal, the ACSS specification ET 03/2006 (revised 2024) asks for an oxygen 93 plant to be located away from ventilation exhausts and car parks, to avoid contaminating its air intake.
- Number of cycles: the ULTRAOX 2022 datasheet states that ULTRAOX cycles are widely spaced, reducing valve operations, and that with fewer cycles the zeolite lasts longer than normal.
How to tell it is time
PATH links recharging to a fall in capacity or purity. Global Fund's daily maintenance checklist records purity on the plant's PLC and with a handheld analyser, and the pressure dew point of the dryer. Its 2025 guide to expected values gives 90% to 96% as the expected purity, treats above 90% as medical grade and says that a reading below 85% should lead to an investigation. HTM 02-01 asks for the quality of gas from PSA plants to be tested at least quarterly.
ULTRAOX
The ULTRAOX 2022 datasheet states that, in good conditions, the zeolite can last up to 10 years or more without the need for replacement, in a plant designed for a minimum life cycle of 150,000 hours. ULTRACON concentrators have two molecular sieve columns with a high-quality zeolite adsorbent. See also how long a PSA oxygen plant lasts.
More questions
Why does moisture matter for PSA zeolite?
AIGA 113/20 notes that an increase in moisture content would lead to accelerated damage of the adsorbers, and lists moisture among the parameters monitored continuously.
Do VSA sieve beds last longer than PSA ones?
WHO's Foundations of medical oxygen systems (2023) states that VSA sieve beds have a longer projected lifespan and require less maintenance than those for PSA.
