Oxygen and PSA
Why do PSA exhaust silencers clog, and what are the risks?
Why do the exhaust silencers of a PSA oxygen generator clog, and what does guidance say about keeping the exhaust clear?
Short answer
A USAID RISE procedure for PSA plants in Indian hospitals (March 2022) and AIGA 113/20 do not say why silencers clog: USAID asks operators to watch for dust or powder at the silencers and check them for clogging yearly; AIGA notes adsorber dust can be in the waste gas vent, which shall be unrestricted.
What passes through the exhaust
During regeneration, a PSA plant discharges its waste product, essentially nitrogen, to atmosphere (NHS England's HTM 02-01, 2026, Part A, paragraph 6.110). The USAID RISE procedure describes solenoid valves that let the nitrogen from the two adsorbent towers be exhausted during the desorption phase. AIGA 113/20, adopted from EIGA Doc 195, says an oxygen 93 supply system produces a significant volume of waste gas, oxygen-depleted or oxygen-enriched air, and adds that dust material from the adsorber beds is an irritant and can also be present in the waste gas vent (section 6.9).
None of these documents sets out the cause of a clogged silencer. Two of them mention dust at the exhaust: AIGA describes adsorber dust in the vent, and the USAID procedure lists dust or powder discharge at the silencers or mufflers among the abnormalities to watch for at start-up.
What the USAID procedure asks operators to check
- At start-up: watch for abnormalities such as unusual sounds in the generator towers, exhaust blowdown and dust or powder discharge at the silencers or mufflers, and follow the troubleshooting steps in the manufacturer's manual.
- Preventive maintenance: pressure relief valves and vent pipes should be cleaned and free of any clogging or rust.
- Annual inspection: check the silencer for clogging.
- If the plant cannot be purged: check that the compressor is working, check the solenoid valve, make sure all manual valves are open, including the exhaust valve, and check whether the silencers of the vent pipe are clean. If the tips do not solve it, the manufacturer or supplier should be contacted.
Why the exhaust path matters
AIGA 113/20 (section 6.9) says the waste gas is likely to create oxygen-deficient or oxygen-enriched atmospheres around the gas vents. All vents shall be directed to a safe location outside the buildings, away from personnel and equipment, shall be unrestricted, and shall be routed and protected from damage by nearby activities such as vehicle traffic; consideration shall be given to reducing the noise to an acceptable level under local legislation. Its section 6.8 lists adsorber vessels, vents and pressure relief valves among the noise sources to be considered as a hazard or nuisance to staff, patients and neighbouring areas.
WHO's Foundations of medical oxygen systems (2023, section 2.2.4) says the nitrogen discharge duct should be vented to the atmosphere and suggests that the exhaust should terminate at least 3 m clear of any door or window that can be opened, or other ventilation or air intake, with its end turned downward. For the plant room, see what ventilation an oxygen plant room needs.
More questions
How often should PSA exhaust silencers be checked?
The USAID RISE procedure for PSA plants in hospitals in India (March 2022) includes a check for silencer clogging in the annual inspection, and asks operators to watch for dust or powder discharge at the silencers at start-up.
Where should PSA exhaust gas go?
AIGA 113/20 says all vents shall be directed to a safe location outside the buildings, away from personnel and equipment, and shall be unrestricted.
