AFNOR outlet (NF S90-116)
An AFNOR outlet is a medical gas terminal unit built to the French standard NF S90-116, which defines for each gas the notched quick-connect system between the socket and the end fitting of the medical device.
NF S90-116 is published by AFNOR, the French standards body. AFNOR lists the October 2020 edition, of 18 pages, as current; it replaced the June 1988 edition, now cancelled. The standard requires the socket to meet NF EN ISO 9170-1, sets the maximum permissible leakage of the connection and the strength of the mounting, and specifies the marking for each gas.
ISO 9170-1, the international standard for terminal units, makes outlets gas-specific but leaves the dimensions of probes to regional or national standards. The World Health Organization lists the French NF S90-116 style next to the German DIN 13260-2 and British BS 5682 styles, among others, and notes that each style uses key-like indexing so that the fittings of each gas service connect only with their own type.
For pipeline design in France, AFNOR lists FD S90-155 (November 2024 edition) as current: additional elements for the design and delivery acceptance of pipelines for compressed medical gases and vacuum.
