CSA Z7396.1:22 Medical gas pipeline systems, Part 1 (Canada)

CSA Z7396.1:22 is the CSA Group standard for medical gas pipeline systems in health care facilities, covering pipelines for medical gases, medical vacuum, medical support gases and anaesthetic gas scavenging; it is a National Standard of Canada, and on 22 October 2026 CSA Group listed the 2022 fifth edition as its newest.

What the standard covers

CSA Z7396.1 specifies safety requirements for pipelines for medical gases, medical vacuum, medical support gases and anaesthetic gas scavenging systems (AGSS) in public and private health care facilities. It applies to all facilities providing health care services, whatever their type, size, location or range of services, including acute care and in-patient continuing care hospitals, long-term care facilities, community-based providers, leased suites in office buildings, and ambulatory and outpatient clinics such as day surgery, endoscopy clinics, dentists' offices and doctors' offices.

Its requirements cover the design of systems for continuous supply of gas or vacuum in normal condition or in single fault condition, the selection of materials and components, non-interchangeability between gas systems, cleanliness, installation procedures, control, monitoring and alarm systems, marking, contaminant testing, the final testing of each pipeline before patient use to confirm that it contains only the specified gas, and maintenance and ongoing verification.

The medical gases named in its application clause include oxygen USP, oxygen 93 USP, medical air USP, nitrous oxide USP, carbon dioxide USP, helium USP and listed mixtures; the medical support gases it names are instrument air and nitrogen NF.

What it does not cover

  • Plume evacuation systems: no specific requirements; informative guidance is given in Annex R.
  • Hyperbaric chambers connected to the pipeline: no specific requirements; CSA points to CSA Z275.1.
  • Veterinary and animal research facilities: the standard does not apply.
  • Retrofitting: the standard is primarily intended for new installations and does not require existing systems to be retrofitted; Clause 11.5 covers repairs, additions and modifications to existing pipeline systems.

Edition in force and status

  • CSA Z7396.1:22 is the fifth edition, published in 2022 in English and French, and supersedes the editions published in 2017, 2012, 2009 and 2006. The English PDF has 251 pages.
  • CSA Group's edition history still shows Z7396.1-17 (R2022), Z7396.1-12 and Z7396.1-09 as active and CAN/CSA-Z7396.1-06 as withdrawn. The store page also notes that an update to the product is available.
  • The 2022 edition expands requirements and guidance on maintenance, AGSS safety and operation, oxygen concentrators, and alarms and monitoring, and adds a requirement for an emergency management program (Clause 4.11).
  • In the standard, "shall" expresses a requirement and "should" a recommendation.

Relation to other standards

CSA describes Z7396.1 as comparable in scope to ISO 7396-1 and ISO 7396-2, with requirements that reflect Canadian practices and safety considerations. Its gas list uses USP and NF designations, for example oxygen 93 USP (see USP Oxygen 93 Percent). NFPA 99 is a separate code; NFPA lists 2027 as its current edition.

More questions

Does CSA Z7396.1 cover oxygen 93?

Yes. The standard applies to pipeline systems for medical gases that include oxygen 93 USP, alongside oxygen USP and medical air USP.

Does CSA Z7396.1 apply to existing installations?

It is primarily intended for new installations and does not require existing systems to be retrofitted; Clause 11.5 covers repairs, additions and modifications to existing pipeline systems.
