EN ISO 23402-3:2024, Dentistry: portable dental equipment for use in non-permanent healthcare environment, Part 3: portable suction equipment, is the European adoption of the ISO standard for portable suction equipment used mainly by dental professionals in non-permanent healthcare environments; ISO published ISO 23402-3:2024 in April 2024 and EVS lists EVS-EN ISO 23402-3:2024 as valid.
Edition and status

What it covers
- Terminology, classification, requirements and test methods for portable suction equipment primarily intended for use by dental professionals in non-permanent healthcare environments.
- Suction equipment built into a portable dental unit and free-standing portable suction equipment, providing reduced pressure and flow at the cannula connector; its requirements focus on portability.
- Requirements for the information to be supplied by the manufacturer on performance, operation and maintenance, and for the instructions on assembling, disassembling and packing the equipment for human transport between non-permanent healthcare environments.
What it does not cover
- Stationary dental equipment, wearable equipment such as headlamps and loupes, and mobile dental equipment.
- Portable dental equipment not intended for non-permanent healthcare environments, or not designed to be disassembled, folded or packed for human transport; stationary equipment installed in a dental mobile medical facility, such as a vehicular or containerized clinic, is not considered.
- Portable suction equipment used for life support or for scavenging halogenated anaesthetic gases.
Relation to other standards
- ISO 23402-1:2026, Part 1: General requirements (edition 2, July 2026), replaced ISO 23402-1:2020. It applies to portable dental units, patient chairs, operator's stools, operating lights, suction source equipment, air compressors and other portable dental equipment, and leaves particular requirements to the subsequent parts.
- Electrically powered medical and surgical suction equipment used in hospitals, domiciliary care and field and transport use is covered by ISO 10079-1:2022 (edition 4), which has an Amendment 1:2026.
- Central dental vacuum is outside ISO 7396-1:2016, which does not apply to vacuum systems intended to be used in dentistry.
